Shea Butter - Alternative
Ingredient for Cosmetics
Oil or fat is main ingredient of cosmetic formulations. Vegetable oils
which have gained popularity as a primary source of energy are
derived from plant energy storage. It is used as a moisturizer in
cosmetics tomoisturize the skin. It helps prevent the loss of oil that nourishes
the skin. Plant fat which is popular nowadays is shea butter because of benefits
to skin and hair. Shea Butter had been used since the queen Cleopatra era
and has been continuously developed to date.

Shea tree (Butyrospermumparkii ) ismostly found in theWest African savanna
to the Sahara desert in the middle. It has a lifespan about 200 years and is
capable to harvest the butter from20 years. It canwithstand dryweather very
well. Shea seeds containmore than 50% fat. It was called “WhiteGold of Africa”​
due to it makes income to locals, especiallyAfricanwomen.The fatty acids in
shea butter are almost omega-6 fatty acids, including oleic acid and linoleic,
including vitamin E. Research found that it can reduce transepidermal water
loss (TEWL), thereby increasing skin moisture. Figure 1 shows the effects of
shea butter and other available moisturizers.

ต้นเชีย (Butyrospermum parkii) พบมากบริ เวณทวีป
แอฟริกาตะวันตกแถบทุ่งหญ้าสะวันนาไปจนถึงทะเลทราย
ซาฮาร่าในทางตอนกลาง เป็นพืชยืนต้นมีอายุได้ประมาณ
200 ปี สามารถเก็บเกี่ยวผลผลิ ตได้ตั้ งแต่อายุ 20 ปี
ทนทานต่ออากาศแห้งแล้งได้ดี เมล็ดเชียมีไขมันมากกว่า 50%
ได้รับการขนานนามว่ าเป็น“ทองคำ�ขาวแห่งแอฟริกา”เนื่องจาก
การเก็บเกี่ยวผลเชียทำ�รายได้ให้แก่คนในท้ องถิ่นโดยเฉพาะ
