พืชสมุนไพรหลายชนิดมีฟลาโวนอยด์เป็นองค์ประกอบ สารเคมีกลุ่ม
นี้ทำ�ให้เกิดอาการต่างๆ เช่น โลหิ ตจางจากการแตกตัวของเม็ดเลือด
ท้องร่วงเรื้อรัง โรคไต และโรคลำ�ไส้ อักเสบ
สารก่อกลายพันธุ์
สารแอนทรานอยด์ที่ออกฤทธิ์เป็ นยาระบายในพืชบางชนิ ดมีความ
ปลอดภัย เช่น ว่ านหางจระเข้ คาสคารา แฟรงกูลา และโกฐน้ำ�เต้า แต่
หากใช้เป็นเวลานาน (10-30 ปี) จะเป็นปัจจัยเสี่ยงต่อการเกิดมะเร็งลำ�ไส้
เมื่อไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมามี ผู้ใช้ยาทางเลือกหรื อใช้ยาชนิดอื่นร่วมกับยาแผนปัจจุบัน
เพิ่มมากขึ้น การรั กษาด้วยยาสมุนไพรนั้นให้ความหวังที่เป็นไปได้มากที่สุด

กรดเอริสโทโลคิก
พิษต่อไตจากยาสมุนไพรที่ไม่ได้มี การปนเปื้อนสารอันตรายอื่นๆ ส่ วนใหญ่
เป็นอาการไตอักเสบจากกรดเอริสโทโลคิก (AA) ผู้ผลิตยาลดน้ำ�หนั ก
ใช้อริสโตโลเชีย (Aristolochia fangchi) เป็นสมุนไพรแทนสเตฟาเนี ย
(Stephania tetrandra) ด้ วยความผิดพลาด อริสโตโลเชียมีกรดเอริสโท
โลคิกซึ่งเป็นสารอัลคาลอยด์ที่เป็นพิษต่อไตและเป็ นสารก่อมะเร็งในมนุษย์
และสัตว์ อาการไตอักเสบจากกรดเอริ สโทโลคิกจะเกิดพังผืด (ไฟโบรซิ ส)
ที่ไตและทำ�ให้ท่อไตฝ่อ ซึ่ งจะเกิดที่ไตส่วนคอร์เทกซ์ชั้นนอกมากกว่าชั้น

herbs is aristolochic acid (AA) nephropathy. Stephania plant
(Stephania tetrandra ) had been inadvertently replaced by
Aristolochia (Aristolochia fangchi) by the manufacturers of
the weight-reducing formula. Aristolochia contains AA, a
plant alkaloid, which is nephrotoxic and carcinogenic in
humans and animals. The AA nephropathy is characterized
by extensive renal interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy,
which generally decreases in intensity from the outer to the
inner cortex. Endothelial cell swelling is often apparent with
consequent thickening of interlobular and afferent arterioles.
Uroepithelial malignancies are common, especially with total
cumulative dose of Aristolochia in excess of 200 g.
Nephrotoxicity of Herbs and Herbal
Preparations
The herbal treatments for complications caused by dialysis
and chronic renal failure and any use of medicinal herbs may
be inappropriate for the renal patient. Literature on herbs and
the dialysis patient suggested the avoidance of borage (Borago
officinalis), comfrey (Symphytum spp.), coltsfoot (Tussilago
farfara) and golden ragwort (Senecio aureus) because of their
pyrrolizidine alkaloid content and hence hepatotoxic potential,
and sassafras (Sassafras albidum) because of its safrole content.
This included the avoidance of chaparral (Larreatri dentata) and
germander (Teucrium chamaedrys) because of their potential
